Can a third party candidate ever win in America?

Republicans and Democrats are the main parties, but what about a third party candidate, Ross Perot got 18% of the vote in 1992, but his party got no real gains because they won no electoral votes, that does not seem like a fair system? Will America be stuck with the GOP and the DNC forever?
