Final Cut Pro Keyboard Shortcuts on a Mac PowerBook?

HELP! I'd like to use the shortuct keys for Final Cut Pro (ie. F9 - Insert Clip), but my new PowerBook has all the of the shortcut key's already pre-determined. I was told I should hold the FN key and that would make the short cuts work when I had FCP open, but that doesn't seem to be working. Do I need to go into Sys. pref and ign all the key's myself? I've never had to do that with any other program... Not sure how to fix this, would love some help. Please be detailed in your answer :) Thanks!
