Please answer my question?

okay so my friend tammy is going to homecoming with this guy mason and tammy wants me to ask my guy friend max and i know it sounds simple but there is this drama going on with me and max's friend sammy i like max and so does sammy and sammy is clingy and hangs all over him and basically diggs her claws into him and wont let him out of sight i have noticed him trying to get some space between them they arent dating i have asked him many times he says no every time so i want to ask max to homecoming cuz it will releave my friend tammy of some stress but max goes to a different school and i have a feeling that the girls and the guys will split up once we get there like we are going to dinner and then homecoming so once we get to school i think guys will go one way and girls will go another if that happens it will be so awkward for max and me so idk what to do then so basically how do i ask max to go to homecoming just as a friend how do i let him know im doing this for tammy since she asked me to but with out saying it like that like i want him to know i like him but i probably wouldnt ask him if my friend hadnt ask me too so how do i ask him without that awkwardness
